To kick off our october theme of "In the Orchard," we had a day all about the book "Ten Apples Up On Top" by Dr. Suess.
First we read the story...
The children then made a Ten Apples Up on Top headband. I drew the circles on red construction paper and asked the children to cut them out. They glued one on top of the other as they counted to ten. We attached them to a strip of white construction paper to make a headband. The children thought these were hilarious!
For our tray play, I had each character from the story attached to a popsicle stick with a tooth pick attached to the top. They counted out ten beads and placed them on the character's head.

Learning is a process and authentic assessment allows me to capture learning as it happens each day. Each day as the children as completing their daily activities, I am capturing photos(as you can see on my FB page) and taking notes which I use to complete each child's Child Service Report. New this year, I have created a Child Portfolio binder for each child. In this binder, the parent will find photos from one daily activity along with some of my notes. You will also find selected artwork and writing samples as additional documentation to support of your child's learning process. I am very excited for each parent to be connected more to their child's learning and this will also be a great keepsake for years to come!

During the month of September, the children will learn new ways to make new friends, talk to friends, be respectful of differences and express their feelings. We will learn letters F, P and K. We will learn the shape of a circle, the color blue and numbers 1&2. We will also learn the spanish words for happy, sad, scared, mad, surprised, pig, kite and fox!

For the month of June, we will be reviewing the alphabet as we explore the many places that people and animals call home! From apartments to castles, spider webs to tunnels, the children will discover the many cozy places full of life. They will learn how to be helpers and contribute to a community by welcoming guests, being good hosts and cleaning up from A to Z. We will also review numbers 1-20, review our shapes and the color black. We will investigate the places that people live, how we decorate different rooms, how we can be helpers around the house, and the homes where animals live.

The month of May was all about growing in the garden. We investigated what we plant in the garden, how gardens grow, what kind of animals visit the garden, and the kind of foods that grow in the garden. The children were introduced to the letters Yy, Ff, Rr. The were introduced to the color pink, shape of a diamond, as well as numbers 9 and 19.
We learned about rabbits in the garden while introducing the letter Rr and its sound.
We also learned about bees in the garden as we made pollinated poppies art and fingerprint bumblebees.
We learned about seeds this month! We sorted our seeds by color and then planted them into rows as if they were a different colored vegetable.

During the month of April, the children will be diving into the deep ocean and discovering plant life and sea creatures big and small. The children will explore a mysterious shipwreck, count the treasures from a sunken chest and experiment with what sinks and floats! They will pretend to swim inside ocean caves as they explore this exciting world of water! The children will learn letters Oo, Ww, and Xx. They will learn numbers 8 and 18, the color blue and the shape of a triangle.
Weekly Investigations this month:
1. How does the ocean look under the surface water?
2. What large creatures live in the ocean?
3. What small creatures live in the ocean?
4. What are different ways we explore the ocean?

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Today during circle time, we discussed what we knew about St. Patrick's Day. We opened with an I Spy rhyme. I chose something green in the room and inserted the name of a child that I encouraged to find the item.
"I spy something green on this St. Patty's Day. M'Kaylah it's your turn to guess it , if you may."
For our visual arts, fine motor skills and physical science skills: We discussed the colors that we have seen in a rainbow. The children went on a hunt around the room to try to find something that represented each color in the rainbow. We then headed to the art room where each child drew a rainbow shape on their paper and decided which colors he/she wanted to include in their rainbow design. I encouraged each child to trace over their rainbow with glue and sprinkle their salt packet onto it. I also encouraged them to touch part of the design with paint and watch the color spread.
For our literacy, listening comprehension, vocabulary and science skills: We read, "Green Shamrocks" by Eve Bunting. After reading, the children retold the story in their own words. I asked the children what seeds needed to grow in the story. We then headed to the art room where each child received their own mini pot and enough soil to fill their pot. The children placed their shamrock seeds in the soil and covered them with a very thin layer of soil. They gently watered them and covered them with plastic wrap. We carried them over to the classroom where it's very sunny. The children are very excited to observe their pots each day and discuss what they have noticed! Once they have sprouted, they will get to take their pots home to share with their families!

During the month of March, we have been learning about the things in space. On Day 8, we learned about Mars. During circle time, we discussed why we thought Mars was red. We reviewed the shape of a star that was introduced earlier in the month by putting paper triangles together to form a star shape.
For our concepts of print, reading comprehension and self directional skills: We discussed who or what we thought could travel in outer space. I explained that many animals have traveled in space including monkeys, dogs, mice, frogs, fish and even spiders! I set out our story of the month, "Up in Space: A Counting Book" for the children to explore the pages. I then read the story aloud and chose one child per page to find and tap the spaces between the words.
For our visual arts, self concept and communication skills: We discussed what we have seen flying in the sky. I invited the children to explore tossing paper plates like flying saucers. I then invited each child to choose jewels and any other materials they wanted to decorate their UFOs. I encouraged them to paint the paper plate, glue on the jewels and attach the cup upside down to one of the plates. When the plates were done drying, I invited the children to staple the plates together to create a UFO. Once we were done creating, it was time to PLAY! I played a song on our Blast Off to Space CD and invited the children to dance and fly their UFOs around the room. I stopped the music and they landed their UFOs. The children shared where they came from and where on Earth they landed.
For our number concepts, logic and social relationship skills: We discussed what we thought the surface of Mars was like. I explained that mars has many mountains and canyons, only much deeper and much higher than the ones on Earth. I invited the children to try to build the tallest tower they could with blocks as I observed problem-solving strategies. I then encouraged the children to work together to build a mountain with 17 blocks. The children counted out the blocks and used the counting card to verify they were right.
During closing circle time, we reflected on what we would like to explore on Mars. I played the song, "Red Mars" and invited the children to stretch and reach slowly and calmly to the song.

This month the children are traveling around the world. They have already packed their suitcases and grabbed a map! The children are excited to weave a carpet, build a drum, and build their own version of the Great Wall of China! They will be exploring world wonders and then find beauty in their own backyards! Each child has a passport to collect memories in this month's gobal celebration of diversity!
Basic concepts this month include: The letters Gg, Kk, and Pp. They will learn numbers 6 and 16. They will learn the shape of a heart and the color red.
