The month of February is all about health foods and being fit. This week we are focusing on the food groups and today was all about dairy.
During opening circle, we discussed the foods that we eat that are made from dairy and were introduced to the ABBC pattern.
For our life science skills, we discussed how many stomachs we have and the children guessed how many stomachs they thought a cow has. I gave each child a cow body parts page and encouraged them to cut the pieces out, fold their paper plate in half and glue the organs(heart and stomachs) to the plate. We then stapled a vinyl glove inside of the plate and let dangle like the cow udders. It was then time to play! The children had fun pretending to milk their cow's milk into a bucket!
We learned that cows like to eat weeds and corn! For our fine motors skills, we practiced picking up corn kernals with tweezers and dropping them into the cow with our "Feed the Cow" tray play activity!
For reviewing our heart shape that we learned a couple days ago, the children drew a cow and a heart for the cow in their little journals.
During story time, we read "The Milk Makers." We learned all about the process of how milk gets from the cow to our homes!
During closing circle, we reflected on the foods that we know that are food for our bones. We listened to the "Dairy Disco Dance" and I invited the children to step sideways as the song played. We followed the words and touched our head then toes. Then began to step sideways in the other direction.
Tomorrow our next food group will be protein!
