Today we kicked off our Bees and Butterflies theme by learning about a bee's home! 

During Opening Circle, we were introduced to the shape of a hexagon. The children traced a hexagon in the air with their finger as we counted the sides together, "Buzz 1...Buzz 2....Buzz 3....Buzz 4...Buzz 5....Buzz 6..."

For our visual arts, fine motor skills and physical science: We created our own beehives by stamping bubble wrap bags and making cell designs on both of our paper hives. We learned that there are cells inside of all bee homes where the bees store food or lay their eggs! We then cut ovals from our left over yellow paper to decorate and make them look like bees. We hid the bees inside the hive painting and played Peek-a-boo with the bees. 

To continue our introduction to the hexagon shape, I set out the attribute blocks and invited the children to find the hexagons and stack them in a tower. We counted the sides and checked that the shapes all had six sides. Next, we worked together to create a beehive design with all the hexagons!

My toddlers enjoyed their tray play activity today of Bees in a Bottle. I encouraged the children to put the bees(cotton balls) into the bottle and shake them out. A great activity for our fine motor skills!
